2012 Student Creative Arts and Research Symposium

The application for the 2012 Student Creative Arts and Research Symposium is now available. The symposium will be on the Denton Campus and virtually via SecondLife on Tuesday, April 17, and Wednesday, April 18, 2012. In order for a student to present at the Symposium, an abstract form must be completed by Thursday, February 23, 2012. The abstracts will be submitted online through the TWU SharePoint system. Instructions for submitting an abstract for presentation can be found at the Symposium website.

This is a wonderful opportunity for you to develop confidence and skills in presenting your creative arts and research to others. It is also an opportunity for you to converse with faculty and fellow students about research and creative activities. You may request oral, poster, or virtual presentation formats for research.

Spring 2012 Payment Requirements

January 10; 6 p.m. - Early Registration Phase I Payment Deadline for Spring 2012 (and Spring1, Spring2 and Spring3 for some BUS 5000+ courses only). All non-paid registrations will be dropped. Students may re-register January 11-13 without incurring a late registration fee.
January 13; 6 p.m. - Registration Phase II Payment Deadline for Spring 2012 (All Terms) All non-paid registrations will be dropped. Students may re-register during late registration and incur a late registration fee.
January 17-20 - Late Registration Period Late registration fee will be applied.
January 20; 6 p.m. - Late Registration Payment Deadline for Spring 2012. Minimum payment and acceptance of the online payment plan agreement must be made by this deadline. All non-paid registrations will be dropped.
January 23 - February 1 - During this time period, students can go to the Registrar’s Office and re-register. Minimum payment and acceptance of the payment plan (via ‘Pay Online’ link on TWU homepage or Current Student and Future Student Pages) MUST be completed at time of transaction. If payment is not received and payment agreement has not been completed all registration transactions will become void and student will be dropped from the class roll.
February 2 - February 13 - All reinstatements must have the approval of the appropriate Director (Registrar, Financial Aid or Bursar) through the Student Problem Resolution Procedure. If approval is granted, payment MUST be made at the time of reinstatement.
After February 13 - No reinstatements will be approved or made unless there is an error on the part of the University.

Travel Warning to Mexico

With holiday travel approaching quickly, we feel it is important to make sure you are aware that the U.S. Department of State (DOS) has recently extended its travel warnings for U.S. citizens traveling in Mexico.

The DOS extended travel restrictions to Mexico include all states listed on the U.S. State Department Travel Warning list. Travel to Mexico is suspended for the seven Border States, to Tamaulipas and Michoacán, and to parts of the states of Sonora, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Sinaloa, Durango, Zacatecas, San Luis Potosi and Jalisco.

TWU students, and faculty-led student programs sponsored by TWU, may not travel to destinations on the travel warning list for University purposes. TWU students traveling to Mexico do so as a private citizen and not under the auspices of TWU. However, all U.S. citizens traveling throughout Mexico should exercise caution in unfamiliar areas and to be aware of their surroundings at all times. Regardless of destination, we recommend all international travelers take appropriate precautions to protect their safety and health.

Online Student Newspaper - The Lasso!

The TWU Lasso is trying to print stories without paper. This would be nearly impossible without the help of the Internet. Now, Pioneers and Dentonites will be able to log onto http://www.twulasso.com for daily updates, blogs, podcasts and news.

“The Lasso website is going to revolutionize how Pioneers get their news,” said Editor-in-Chief Aaron Claycomb. “I am confident that the quality, design and writing can compete with any major news organization in the country.”

The Lasso’s website officially launched in Aug. 2011 with stories from the summer editions. The website functions like a newspaper with different sections ranging from news to sports to arts & entertainment. Not only will printed content be reposted on the website but follow-ups and online-only content will also make its way into the TWU cyberspace.

Click on the link in the Organization ID section of the chart. It should say TWUGS.
On the next page, click the “Click here to enroll” link.

All undergraduate and graduate students are invited to apply for participation in the 2011 Student Creative Arts & Research Symposium! You can submit an abstract or artist statement for a visual arts exhibit or a poster, platform or virtual presentation.

Abstract forms for presentations are due Thursday, February 24, 2011. The Symposium will be held Tuesday, April 12, and Wednesday, April 13, 2011.

This is a wonderful opportunity for you to develop confidence and skills in presenting your creative arts and research to others. It is also an opportunity for you to converse with faculty and fellow students about research and creative activities. You may request oral, poster, or virtual presentation formats for research. Again this year, TWU will fund student poster preparation.

Spring 2011 Payment Deadlines

January 11 – 6 p.m. – Early Registration Phase I Payment Deadline for Spring 2011(and Spring1, Spring2 and Spring3 for some BUS 5000+ courses only). All non-paid registrations will be dropped. Students may re-register January 12-14 without incurring a late registration fee.

January 14 – 6 p.m. – Registration Phase II Payment Deadline for Spring 2011(All Terms). All non-paid registrations will be dropped. Students may re-register during late registration and incur a late registration fee.

January 18 – 21 – Late Registration Period. Late registration fee will be applied.

January 21 – 6 p.m. – Late Registration Payment Deadline for Spring 2011. Minimum payment and acceptance of the online payment plan agreement must be made by this deadline. All non-paid registrations will be dropped.

January 24 – February 2 -- (Census Day) – During this time period, students can go to the Registrar’s Office and re-register. Minimum payment and acceptance of the payment plan (via ‘Pay Online’ link on TWU homepage or Current Student and Future Student Pages) MUST be completed at time of transaction. If payment is not received and payment agreement has not been completed all registration transactions will become void and student will be dropped from the class roll.

February 3 – February 14 (20th Class Day) – All reinstatements must have the approval of the appropriate Director (Registrar, Financial Aid or Bursar) through the Student Problem Resolution Procedure. If approval is granted, payment MUST be made at the time of reinstatement.

After February 14 – No reinstatements will be approved or made unless there is an error on the part of the University.

Students who take distance education courses have a wealth of student services available to them, with more added each semester. One goal of Texas Woman’s University in regards to serving its distance learners is to be able to offer equal service to them without requiring them to come to campus.

Academic Resources

Currently, distance learners have full access to the course catalog; they can register and pay online and meet with their advisor by phone, email or chat. If it is necessary to drop a course, a student can do that by contacting the department offering the course they want to drop, all without coming to campus.

When it comes to utilizing the library, the TWU Blagg-Huey Library is next to none in what it offers its distance learners. For starters, distance learners have their very own librarian and staff members available to help them get started with their research. Ms. Stephany Compton is the Distance Education librarian and is always eagerly helpful. Distance learners can also utilize any of the electronic resources that are available to them via the Internet: the TWU Library Catalog, databases, subject guides, articles and electronic books. Distance learners can receive a TexShare card that allows them to check out books at any participating library in the State of Texas. In addition, they can utilize interlibrary loan and take advantage of research tools that assist with citation and bibliographies. All of these rich tools can be accessed by students without making a trip to the library on campus.

Student Life Resources

At the hub of non-academic student services is the Office of Commuter Services. This office works with the different areas of Student Life to establish equal and accessible student services for distance learners. Students can contact this office at 940.898.2789 to voice ideas or ask questions about available student services. Their announcements can be found on the Facebook page, “TWU Off Campus Students” and through Twitter at “TWUOffCampus.”

Every distance learner should receive a TWU Student ID after the 12th class day from ID Services. Students can use their student ID to obtain student discounts wherever they are given and students must present their student ID card whenever they use the TexShare card.

The TWU Write Site offers assistance to distance learners through the Online Writing Lab or OWL. Students can submit their writing assignments to the OWL and receive feedback about their paper.

Distance learners can buy their text books online and have them shipped through the TWU Bookstore website. When it’s time to graduate, distance learners who want to participate in commencement can purchase graduation regalia online as well.

When graduation is drawing near that means it is also time for students to start thinking about a job. For this, they can enlist the help of TWU Career Services. This office has a whole website devoted to the services and resources they offer distance learners.

The TWU Counseling Center has many self-help resources available on their website including information about sexual harassment and testing. Due to legal issues, the Counseling Center is unable to communicate with any student via the Internet or email or other electronic means.

In addition to these academic and student life service areas, distance learners also have full access to the TWU Help Desk if technical issues arise with Blackboard, registration, Pioneer Portal, TWU email, Microsoft applications and other TWU-related tech issues. They can be contacted by phone, email and online chat.

If for any reason distance learners want to come to the TWU Denton campus, they can obtain a free, temporary parking pass from the DPS office. This free parking pass is available once per semester only to students who are enrolled in distance education courses.

Epsilon Omega Epsilon

Epsilon Omega Epsilon (EOE) was established at Texas Woman’s University in 2009 to be the national honor society for students in higher education pursuing a degree through distance education.

The first group of qualified students was invited to join in the spring 2010 semester, and on May 3, 200 TWU students were inducted into EOE as its inaugural members. The first group of officers was elected shortly thereafter. This fall, over 140 new members will be inducted as new members, giving the TWU chapter over 300 members. EOE hopes to add more nationwide chapters beginning spring 2011.

The State of Distance Education at TWU

For the fourth consecutive semester, the number of students enrolled in Distance Education (DE) courses at Texas Women’s University has increased. This statement holds true both of students taking a mix of DE and face-to-face courses and those taking DE courses only.

For the fall 2010 semester a total of 7,439 students at TWU were enrolled in at least one DE course. Of those students 3,758 were taking only DE courses.

Distance education is defined as a course or program in which over 50 percent of the instruction is delivered via satellite, compressed video, Internet, or other electronic means. Under the umbrella of Distance Education, courses are further classified as either Fully DE or Hybrid DE. Fully DE courses are delivered 85 to 100 percent electronically, and Hybrid/Blended courses are delivered more than 50 but less than 85 percent electronically.

Here are some other quick facts about the state of distance education at TWU for the fall 2010 semester:

Through distance education we offer 18 graduate degrees (some of which can be earned 100 percent online), nine undergraduate completion degrees and six certificates.
276 faculty members from each of TWU’s four colleges teach via DE.
Students taking DE courses only account for 26 percent of the total TWU enrollment.
TWU offered 719 distance learning course sections.
The majority of the DE-only students live in the Metroplex followed by the Gulf Coast Region, followed by out-of-state students.
The majority of our out-of-state, DE-only students live in Oklahoma, followed by Arkansas, Louisiana and California. We even have students from as far away as Alaska!
The majority of our DE-only students are 22 to 30 years old, closely followed by 31 to 40-year-olds.

Democracy Shout Out is part of the Constitution Day events for 2010 at Texas Woman's University. Organized by the Department of History and Government, Democracy Shout Out is a chance to give students and other members of the community a safe forum to voice their views and opinions on a variety of issues that relate to the campus, the community and the country. You can participate online or on-campus by responding to issues that matter to you. These forums will be available Monday, September 13 through Wednesday, September 15.

DENTON, Texas (Feb. 24) – The Texas Woman’s University basketball team will take on Tarleton State when it opens the Lone Star Conference Championship tournament on Thursday, March 4 at Noon.

The Pioneers are making their eighth appearance in the conference tournament and will have their highest seed in school history.

All the championship games will be aired live via internet video streaming HERE. The webcasts are available free of charge. Each webcast includes both video and audio, with viewers needing only a computer with a high-speed DSL or cable modem connection to the internet. Veteran broadcaster Chris Needham has the call for all the games.

TWU Student Regent Applications Available

Applications are being accepted for the next Texas Woman’s University Student Regent, and for student representatives to the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board and advisory committees.

The Student Regent is the highest university leadership position to which a student can be appointed while enrolled in Texas public higher education. Serving on an advisory committee of THECB will provide a unique leadership experience for a student.

We are looking for the brightest students who are willing to represent TWU at the highest levels of leadership, and take an active role in helping shape higher education policy in Texas.

Symposium Overview
The purpose of this symposium is to increase knowledge of health risks among women over the age of 18. The intent is to raise early awareness among young women for disease prevention and health promotion. The speakers will provide valuable tools, specific to women, that ease incorporating daily wellness strategies in the areas of healthy eating, stress management, and financial health.

Women over the age of 18

Registration Fee
Registration fee will be $15 per person until September 10, 2009. After this date, the registration fee will be $20. Registration deadline is September 16, 2009. On-site registration will be accepted on a space available basis only.

Good morning TWU Distance Learners and welcome to the fall 2009 semester! I hope your classes are going well so far and that you are getting into a new routine without any problems.

Don't forget about the Getting Started Guide. It's a great tool to go through if you've never taken an online class before. It covers how to communicate, Blackboard tools and services that are available to you as an online learner, as well as other tips to be successful!

Don't let your career plans take back burner! Whether you are graduating this year or have several semesters left, it's never too early to prepare for your career. Come to the 2009-2010 Career Seminars to get prepared and then when you are ready to look for that new job, attend one of the 2009-2010 Career Days! You'll be glad you did!
